In 1873 in Mongolia a graveyard of giant shells was discovered in Erenhot.
Most of the specimens discovered during this expedition were divided between the
different museums of the world but certain private collectors were able to buy some of them.
In 1875, the Earl of Preaux purchased a buccin shell which measured about 20 meters and had it fitted out as a residential vehicle destined to be used for sunday outings on the Norman beaches.
